My first impression is that you have a beautiful “radio” voice! π You sounded great. I enjoyed the program too. You have made me want to start some herbs earlier in the winter/spring to replant outside with the Mason jars. I have seen some kitchen herb garden ideas on Pinterest in the past but didn’t have a good window for light to let them grow. Since we moved my laundry room has great lighting so I would love to grow some next winter/spring. I didn’t think I would want to plant garlic this spring but since I started canning pickles and was using your recipe with the cloves of garlic, I now want to. I had bought organic garlic cloves for the jars I have canned so far and that was pretty expensive.
I look forward to your next podcast!
Melissa, Great Show! I enjoyed reading your book and felt so inspired. Growing up we always had a garden filled with veggies and I’ve tried to do my best to have my own each year, stepping out and trying new veggies every year.
Great Job Melissa! It’s never too late to start growing your own food. I never had a garden growing up, but the last ten years I have grown my own veggies and herbs and I love it. As I’ve gotten older and my back can’t take all of the bending over, I have started growing more and more in containers. I am learning by trial and error what works and what doesn’t, and am having a ton of fun. I’m looking forward to hearing future podcasts
Sharon, Thank you! And you’re so right, it’s never too late to start growing a garden. I’d love to hear about your container gardening experience. What’s working and what’s not. I’ve got lots of space, so I only container garden some of my herbs, tomatoes, and peppers.
Leslie, thank you. Growing garlic is super easy, especially in raised beds and containers. It’s pretty cheap, especially once you grow enough to save some bulbs to plant for the next year, then it becomes free, my favorite. π
Noel, thank you. I’m so glad you enjoyed the book and it inspired you. And congrats to you for continuing to garden. We always try one new veggie a year to keep things interesting and fun. Sometimes it’s a success and a new annual addition, others we don’t bother with again. π This year, I’m trying a short season Okra beings we’re normally not warm enough.

Melissa-can’t say thank you enough for this info! I didn’t hear you mention using manure in composting. It sounds like no-need to dry it out to prevent weeds, and then maybe mix it in?
Thank you!
If you’re putting the manure into a compost pile, it will be broken down and dried out over time, it would depend on how long you let it compost before adding it to your garden. We’ve let ours break down for at least six months to a year before adding it and haven’t had a problem.
Hi Melissa
I’ve really been enjoying your podcasts so much I thought I would start at the beginning. Your first podcast is great! You have a nice voice but it’s funny how your bubbly personality doesn’t jump out yet. I guess you were more reserved for your first podcast! π
Thank you so much for all the inspiration. We’ve been on our homestead for 4 years now and the last year has been rough because of some health problems. I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I’m hoping this winter (it’s winter here in July in Chile) that I can get to feeling better and the doctor is helping me with that and you are helping get me inspired and motivated for spring! God Bless! Lori
I was scared to death when I first started podcasting, not at all comfortable yet. Plus I was recording in a public radio station so I was more self conscious. I’m so glad you’re enjoying them though!
