We all have a dream living inside us. Something we want to do someday. Something we tell ourselves we’ll do when we have more time, when the kids are grown, when our finances are better.
Someday never comes.
There will never be a perfect time to start your dream.
I’ve wanted to be a published author ever since I was a little girl. After I had my daughter, I let that dream take a back seat. But it wouldn’t stop nagging at me.
If God has called you to do something, you will be miserable until you step into your calling.
The day I signed with my literary agent, I fulfilled the first part of my publishing dream.
How to turn someday into today.
1.Make it public. If others know about your dream, they’ll hold you accountable. Tell people, “I’m a ______”
2. Set aside time every day to work on your dream. I have a regular day job, a part time job, this blog, and two small children at home. You can find the time to work on making your dream a reality. Look at your schedule and see where you can make room. It doesn’t have to be a large chunk, just daily. I write in the morning, on my lunch break, and after the kids are in bed. I don’t watch much t.v.
3. Make weekly goals. You may not be able to meet a daily goal every day. If you set a weekly goal, you can take up slack on days where you have more time. It’s important to make goals you can reach so you don’t feel discouraged, but they should make you grow and move you closer to your ultimate goal.
4. Educate yourself. You may not be able to go to a course or conference right away. Start with books and magazines that teach you. Look at your local library for books on your subject. Read at least one teaching book/magazine a month.
5. Never stop learning. Don’t allow yourself to grow stagnant. Listen to others who have gone before you. Follow their blogs and apply the advice.
6. Re-evaluate. What worked for you six months ago, may not later. Re-examine your goals. Know what works for you and what doesn’t. Be honest with yourself.
7. Pray. Ask God what He wants for your life. Don’t just tell Him you want things, ask for His guidance.
Let’s do our number one step today. What is your dream? Share your “I am a ______” statement with us.
For those of you who are writers, I’m going to help you out. One winner will win a ten page critique from me of your novel and query letter.

I am a writer! Scary but true! LOL!
The best line in this post by far is this: “If God has called you to do something, you will be miserable until you step into your calling”
This is so true! Live for God full out and live your best life out loud and you will find your purpose!
Great post as always!
Dayna, you are a writer!
I’m glad that we’re both following our calling and get to cheer one another on and watch what God has planned for us. Here’s to living out loud girl!
This is a unique contest! Thanks so much for running it.
You’re welcome, Robyn! I remember when I was starting out, I wanted someone to give me some honest feedback. I found someone and they’ve helped me so much I wanted to give that back to someone else.
Melissa — awesome post here, as always. I like coming to your site just to see the farm photo and exhale. Thanks for always delivering a breath of fresh air. Cheers, j
Thanks, Julie. God’s nature never fails to deliver a fresh breath to me either. I’m glad it relaxes you.
Ok, here it goes… I am a writer. There I said it. Thanks for a brilliant and helpful post, Melissa. I’m so thrilled for you!
Good job, Pilar. You are a writer and learning the ropes from the ground up from what I’ve seen.
Thanks for your encouragement.
Yes, I am a writer! My book is out on submission now–just following that dream–but it is such a nerve-wracking time. Regardless of whether it is accepted or rejected, I know I will keep writing, no matter what. Even as a homeschooling mom fitting it in as I can! Great post!
Heather, congrats on the submissions. It can be nerve wracking but you have the right attitude to succeed, no matter where God uses your writing. And I’ve no doubt He is using you!
I’m a writer! And I’m starting my first book project. It’s extra special and a way for me to help be the voice for someone who is no longer with us and spread her inspiring story. Thanks for this great post!
Yea, Tammy. That first book is always special, especially when you have an emotional attachment to it. Giving someone else a voice is rewarding, congrats!
Very nice post, Mel!

There will never be a perfect time to start your dream. <– This is so true. If we wait for the perfect time we would never start anything, never travel, never start a family. The list goes on.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Sharon. I’m so glad God works with unperfect situations and people.
Inspiring post, Melissa! Looking forward to following your writing journey. Grateful to be part of the WordServe family with you. Blessings!
Thanks, Karen. I thank God weekly for the WordServe family and lift you all up in prayer. We serve a mighty King!
Good points, Melissa. Self-discipline is what it takes to turn a goal into a reality.
Thanks, Janalyn. Self-discipline is sometimes the hardest of all.
