I love books about the Amish, be it non-fiction or fiction. I feel a kinship to these folks. They live off the land and are reliant on our Lord Jesus Christ. Their faith is evident in their lifestyle, not just their words.
I feel the closest to God when I’m out tending our garden, watching His great design of our world unfurl leaf by leaf before my eyes.
While reading, The Captive Heart, by Dale Cramer, I was surprised to find myself siding with the non-Christian, non-Amish, character, Domingo.
The Amish in the book have started their own settlement in the hills of Mexico. Their farms are robbed by bandits and one of their daughters kidnapped. Still, they don’t abide to violence. They won’t take up a gun and defend, because they believe to turn the other cheek, like the Bible says.
I’ve always struggled with this verse in the Bible. I’m feisty by nature and the idea of letting someone hit my other cheek after they’ve struck my other, well, it get’s my blood pumping.
But, I realized something while reading this story. If you don’t believe God is big enough to defend you, to work all things out for His good, no matter what the situation, then do you really believe in Him? If He couldn’t find a way to deliver me from men, then how do I expect Him to deliver me from eternal death?
I won’t spoil the end of this book, but let me say, God is big enough. Both in fiction and in our real world.
Bethany House was gracious enough to send me this free copy in exchange for my honest review. So, in turn, I’d like to pass it along to you.

Have you ever tried to do something on your own, then realized you needed the Father’s help? Have you read Amish fiction before?

Would love to read this book. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for popping by, Barb. I’ve got you down for an entry.
Thanks for the review! I’ve read most of Dale Cramers books and really enjoyed the. I didn’t know he wrote Amish fiction… Sometimes the Amish fiction all sort of runs together for me, so it will be interesting to read some from a new author.

Thanks, Patty. This setting was very different from the usual Amish farms, beings it was in Mexico. I think you’ll really enjoy it.
I enjoy reading Amish stories and this is a new to me author. It sounds like a very interesting book. Interesting concept of a Amish community being set up in Mexico.
Thanks, Jo. I’ve got you down for all your entires. Glad we’ll get to hang out everywhere.
The book was based on a real settlement in Mexico that did fail, but it’s a great change of pace.

Yes, I need God’s help and have learned to ask for it before I try my own more often.
I have read Amish fiction but have not read Dale’s books.

I’ve got all your entries down.
Going to God first is such a must, but the one step I sometime forget to take.
I think you’ll enjoy Dale’s books. My first book of his was Levi’s Will. Both are great.
